{"id":988,"date":"2023-06-03T05:33:10","date_gmt":"2023-06-03T03:33:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bellingo.de\/blog\/?p=988"},"modified":"2023-06-03T05:37:43","modified_gmt":"2023-06-03T03:37:43","slug":"openhabian-troubleshooting-just-redo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bellingo.de\/blog\/openhabian-troubleshooting-just-redo\/","title":{"rendered":"OpenHABian Troubleshooting: just Redo"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I finally got my hands on a new <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raspberry_Pi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Raspberry Pi 4<\/a> and some time to spare &#8211; albeit at the expense of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellingo.de\/blog\/devblog-the-idea-behind-network-traders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Network Traders<\/a> &#8211; to setup a Smart Home server. As server software I chose openHABian. It is super easy to install or, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openhab.org\/docs\/installation\/openhabian.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">installation guide<\/a> puts it, a &#8222;hassle-free openHAB setup&#8220;. While this is true, there are newbie mistakes you can make, as I proved. And here is some advice I wish I had come upon quickly when things went wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>OpenHABian <em>is<\/em> really easy to install. You only have to download the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.com\/software\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Raspberry Pi Imager<\/a> and select the right image. This writes the custom-made OS onto your SD card within minutes, and you are ready to plug it into your Raspberry Pi and go. But lucky are those who can follow a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openhab.org\/docs\/installation\/openhabian.html#raspberry-pi-prepackaged-sd-card-image\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">setup guide<\/a> to the letter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is what happened for me: my new home server started up alright, but the first error I got was about <a href=\"http:\/\/davesteele.github.io\/comitup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Comitup<\/a> being unable to start. The server then tried to connect to the internet but was unable to, and rebooted after a minute or so. What had happened?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class='code-block code-block-2' style='margin: 8px 0; clear: both;'>\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-5801154588989661\"\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\n<!-- Posts Standard -->\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5801154588989661\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"5874520813\"\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Follow the openHABian Setup Guide<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The setup guide says &#8222;Insert the SD card into your Raspberry Pi. Connect your Ethernet or configure Wi-Fi &#8230;&#8220;. This is where I failed. First time I started up the server, I had no ethernet cable connected. Hence the failure to connect to the internet. I then took the SD card out of the Pi and put it back into my card reader to edit the <code><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openhab.org\/docs\/installation\/openhabian.html#openhabian-conf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">openhabian.conf<\/a><\/code> file on my PC. I added my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openhab.org\/docs\/installation\/openhabian.html#wi-fi-based-setup-notes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WiFi credentials<\/a> to get a connection that way, but it was already too late. OpenHABian failed to connect via WiFi as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At that point, my installation was already messed up. As the setup guide says, you need to either connect your Pi via an ethernet cable or configure WiFi <em>before <\/em>starting it for the first time. And here is <em><strong>the solution<\/strong><\/em> to this tangle: just write the openHABian image to your SD card again and restart.
